2 Timothy 4 describes a time that the world will gather around it people who will fulfill what its itching ears want to hear. Pauls letter to Timothy also calls the believer to stand firm in the midst of inconsistency and a world that has turned its back to truth; and to be prepared in season and out to speak the word of God to those around them.

Paul's second letter to the church in Corinth speaks of the importance of the ministry that has been entrusted to all of us that seek to follow Jesus. It is our treasure - but a treasure held in the fragile clay jar that is our human frailty. As this New Year begins, it also reminds us that we must not lose hope - because our confidence is in God's power, not our own, and our one true lasting hope in His Word alone.

Through it all, God demonstrates that He is orchestrating the times and seasons on earth to accomplish His purposes, at the perfect time, in the perfect place, with the perfect cast of people.

"The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.” Isaiah 9:2. The Incarnation is not simply the demonstration of God's great love for the world, but a light shining in the darkness that, even to this day, reminds us that our eternity hangs in the balance depending on how we respond to that light.

Matthew's Gospel begins by emphasizing the kingly line of Joseph, Jesus' adopted father, who like his namesake in the book of Genesis allowed God to change his life through a dream. There is beauty in his apparent betrayal by all those around him as he and Mary embark on a journey of social rejection and shame, oppression and danger that points to the very heart of the mission of their promised child - Jesus.

John describes the birth of Jesus in terms of "the Word" becoming flesh and dwelling "among us". Isaiah, in turn, prophecies that this child will be evidence that 'God is with us.' And yet, immediately after Jesus' birth the righteous Simeon declares that: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel," that He will be "a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed.” (Luke 2: 34). The living Word of God has been spoken for the world to hear, but will we hear it this Christmas?
